Fishing continues, and we have already doubled our total catch from last year with only half of the 2016 run size. We wake up hours before sun rise and fish late into the night. This means more coffee and less sleep for the crew. It’s hard work, but we believe in the ability of this trap and are willing to sacrifice a little sleep to fish under the stars. We have now safely captured and released over 5,500 salmonids and tagged nearly 2,600 Chinook and steelhead.

  1. I really suspect the quality of these fish for human consumption is poor. I also believe that catching anadromous fish inriver has little benefit for run survival than well conducted ocean fisheries. Take for example steelhead runs – of all the anadromous fish runs in the Columbia and Snake River systems the steelhead runs are closest to extinction and almost no steelhead are caught in ocean fisheries. This means to me that you can totally eliminate ocean salmon fisheries and be no nearer to recovering the salmon stocks.

      I respect your comment, however, please understand that your beliefs regarding ocean and in-river fisheries completely contradict the research and findings of the scientific community. Feel free to take any stance, but please take a moment to read peer-reviewed scientific literature. Also, to better understand the collapse of wild stocks in the Columbia and elsewhere, pick up the book “Salmon Without Rivers” by esteemed Biologist Jim Lichatowich.

    2. Ron being a ocean commercial fisherman and eating salmon up and down the coast the early run river fish are much better than the ones in the ocean later run fish not as good but I would take a early run spring in the river before a ocean caught fish

    3. Steelhead and other Pacific trout are nowhere as abundant as Pacific-salmon species, given their differing life histories. Notably, pink, chum, and sockeye salmon are most likely to be caught in the open ocean. You can’t generalize across species, without consideration their different demographics.
